The Waverly house is a ‘resort’ inspired home located on a large vacant site with a western outlook to the adjoining rainforest. The constraints of bushfire zoning and the site’s slope dictated that the home’s building envelope would be in an east-west direction. The challenges of the building envelope provided opportunity for many internal spaces to have a vista to the rainforest whilst maintaining privacy and amenity. The design introduced natural daylight to southern areas through internal courtyards and maximising glazing for borrowed light. The perimeter verandah provides weather and sun protection.
A large vertical garden is located along the length of the eastern boundary to conceal an existing property boundary wall structure and provide a leafy outlook from the indoor/ outdoor living spaces.
The material palette responds to the site’s proximity to the beach and neighbouring rainforest environment. A masonry plinth grounds the home to the site whilst the exterior cladding and decking to the upper floors provide a light textural palette that is sympathetic to the coastal climate.
